About the artist

Kiva Motnyk’s current work in textiles reinterprets historical and cultural traditions of making through modernist abstraction and a uniquely attuned sensibility of color.  The non-pictorial objects resemble paintings or stained glass, evoking a spiritual experience of the natural landscape. The works are imbued with deep origin stories of the textile’s materiality and personal narrative; each element of the composition speaks to the detailed process by which it was made.

Kiva was born in New York City in 1977, the middle child of a surrealist painter and modern dancer. She spent her childhood shifting between her family home in San Francisco and a converted loft in SoHo, provoking an appreciation of both urban and rural life. Since 2008 Kiva splits her time between the foothills of the Catskills and her design studio in Manhattan.

Her work has been exhibited at Ralph Pucci Gallery NYC, The Community Gallery Paris, Bridget Donahue Gallery, Performa 19 at Jeffrey Deitch, Object & Thing at the Luss House, The Stone Barns Center, R & Company and Egg Collective.
